Ship split in two in rough weather off French coast

Spanish cargo ship, the Luna, has sunk after running into a sea wall after getting into difficulties south-west of Bayonne, France.

The accident occurred last wednesday during a storm where wind speeds were 68mph. During the rough weather the vessel suffered catastrophic engine failure and broke into two pieces near the beach.

The crew were airlifted to safety by two rescue helicopters.

French authorities launched an anti-maritime pollution plan after an oil spill was detected.
